War of independence

In the year 1808 in Spain, there was the war of independence against France, this year 2008 is the 200 aniversary, during that war, Mallorca was not ivaded because it was protected by the british fleet, but 40.000 regufees went to Mallorca. This year several activities will be made to celebrate this event

Bullfighting in Palma


On the 24th of July there is a bullfight, here are the bullfighters

In Palma de Mallorca, there is arround two or three bullfights every year, the bullfights in Palma, they are very good so is worth going there, usually they are in the summer, the bad part about it, is that you never know when they are held, and maybe you know the same day or two or three days ahead. The entrance is expensive, but worth the price.

Mallorcan Cuisine Fair

This year The Mallorcan Cuisine Fair (Mostra de Cuina Mallorquina) opens from the 8 th to the 17 th of May, and this year is celebrated in The Palma Arena.

One year more and this is the 22nd the Mallorca cuisine fair is opened. From the 8th of March to the 17th of March. The bad part of the fair, is that you have to go to the fair trade center, but the good thing about it is that you will enjoy all the mallorcan food avaliable. The best restaurants of the island go there to delight the visitors with great food. The new thing this year, is the show-cooking, that this year, will have 20 cooks, every one of them will make a dish, this will start at 15:00 and 21.00

The admision will be 4 euros. Also know that outside of the fair, you will be able to get the green card, with this card you can get discounts on the fair. This fair, is for restaurants, but there is going to be also four hotel and three cooking schools. There will be seven deserts and a total of nine wine makers.

Holy Thursday





The Holy Thursday is the most interesting procesion for the inhabitants of Palma. Goes out the famous Christ of La Sang the first procesion of Holy Thursday was in the year of 1500 so is the oldest. This year rained and it came out on Friday

Holy Wednesday






The holy Wednesday is the only parade that only goes through old town Palma. The procesion starts and finishes in the same place, the church of Santa Cruz. The procesion goes throught the neibourhood of the fisherman. Also, is interesting to see that the military branch of La Legion participates in the procesion

Holy Tuesday






Holy Tuesday the procesion starts in San Nicolas Church and finishes in la Sang. Two important things in this procession are that they play the national spanish anthem before the Cofradia de Santiago comes out and at the end of the procesion that the image of La Dolorosa comes in La Sang

Holy Monday






This year the procesion of Holy Monday has three procesions. The one of every year, comes out from Santa Clara, the second one that comes out from the Cloister of Sant Francesc, and the third one, that comes out from the church of San Juan de Malta.

The church of Santa Clara, is in the convent of Santa Clara, and it is a medieval convent. The nuns never leave the convent it is called Clausura.

On the 16th of March in Moll Vell, starts the 7th race Ciutat de Palma, at ten o clock if you are interested to come, you have to go to el Corte Ingles to participate. The race will be 21.097 meters and there will be 3.000 athletes.

Es Prego

Today is the first procesion of the holy week. It is called es Prego, comes out from San Miguel street and goes to Sant Francesc, three representatives of every group come out with their flag. It is a procesion full of color. Starts at 7:30, what we can see today, it is a small representation of every group (three with them and the flag) Enjoy it! In the pregon there is always a great concert. Luckily I have been able to record it so here you can hear the concert

Barcelo at the Cathedral

One year ago, here are the news: 22 per cent of people more visited the cathedral thanks to this new work of art. More than hundred thousand people MORE


The famous mallorca painter Miquel Barcelo, has finished its last work, a mural for Palma Cathedral. Palma Cathedral is one of the most visited cathedrals in the world, and the most visited monument in Mallorca. In the video we can see the kings of spain doing the grand opening of the new work. This work took seven years to complete, and was the bisthop of Mallorca Theodoro Ubeda, that started with the idea. Unluckily while the project was finished he died. He was not able to see the project whom he had so many critics



Miquel Barcelo is the most known Mallorcan Painter and it is thought to be the next Miro or Picasso

Sa Rueta








This year (2008) the rueta lasted the whole Saturday, usually was only the morning of Sunday only for a few hours. This year, the town hall had the great idea to make The Rueta, the whole day, it was great, because the kids had great fun, it was full of of games for the kids, and all kids had custome.

Festa del Estandart




One King (James I)



His idea (To conquer Catalonia Valencia and Balears)






During the conquest, the port of Palma was invaded, the king James The Conqueror came to invade Mallorca with 155 boats, and he was only twenty one years old. A good way to see how it all happened is to watch the movie Troy. In this movie is very easy to see how a walled city was invaded, and to realize that to pass the wall was very hard. In Palma, like in Troy, the wall was not destroyed, but opened to the enemy as a signal of rendition. After the conquest of Mallorca, in the year 1231 he conquered Menorca, Ibiza in the year 1235 and in Valencia in 1238. He tried also two crusades, but they did not go too well.

Cavalleria Rusticana in Palma

We can remember this representation in the third movie of The Godfather. The setting is based in the south of Italy, that has always a great relation with Mallorca.
